Biography

Today's contemporary art has its roots in the great masters of the past. Serge Déry's deep admiration and respect for these great masters of portraiture led him to explore a contemporary dreamlike approach to his work. Indeed, he sometimes takes over well-known masterpieces by shifting and transgressing them with his butterflies, porcelain, etc. He is fascinated by the philosophy of wabi-sabi and the restoration technique of kintsugi. This Japanese aesthetic and spiritual concept celebrates the beauty of imperfection and scars, transforming flaws into strengths. For most peoples, the butterfly symbolizes the souls of the dead flying away to another life, thus echoing the wabi-sabi philosophy of accepting the natural cycle of life.

By juxtaposing three-dimensional elements in the painting and using the classical Flemish painting method (grisaille and glazing), he forces the viewer to create a new reality. The free association of 3D elements—butterflies, porcelain, and painted surfaces—is greater than the sum of its parts, immersing the viewer in a dreamlike universe.

Layers of bright, intense colors rub shoulders with fine, delicate details. With his blend of classical realism and 3D elements, Serge Déry has developed a unique style that captivates at first glance.
